Sustainability and Recycling: ‘Doing our bit’

At H&T Industrial, we have recognised the importance of ‘doing our bit’ for the environment. And we think it’s important to share our efforts and join the movement. As they say, every little helps…

Sustainability and environmental management is a key area of focus for H&T Industrial’s business, as we look to limit our impact on the environment and world around us through the implementation of a number of strategies and programmes.

Since 2005, HTI have continuously increased production outputs. At our Blackburn site we now produce a staggering 500 million components a year. Yes – 500 million. But we have slowly been working on reducing our carbon footprint by implementing projects such as a voltage reduction programme which reduces our mains supply of 245 volts to a steady 230 volts. This means we have reduced our energy emissions at source prior to being used on any of our machines. Energy efficient motors are also used on all our presses and any new machines or processes are specified to have efficient motors as part of the URS (user requirement specification) and our commitment to climate change.

In addition, by switching from using a hydrocarbon-based degreaser on our wash plants to a solvent process, we have been able to reduce CO2 emissions by 1,015 tonnes per year. So far H&T Industrial has decreased overcall carbon footprint by 31.34% in the last 5 years. And we want to keep that figure rising.

H&T Industrial has a responsibility to ensure our targets regarding WEEE disposable regulations (waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling) are strictly followed. As a result, all our computers and electronic tools are disposed of correctly therefore reducing overall contribution of electrical waste in landfill. Electrical and electronic waste can contain hazardous metals such as lead and mercury. When these goods are cremated or taken to landfill, the harmful substances can pollute the air, ground and surface water, exposing land and sea animals to many risks.

It’s not just our manufacturing site that is doing their bit for the environment; our offices are also making sure they can help tackle climate change. All of our offices are equipped with a number of recycling bins for waste paper, helping to save the planet one sheet of paper at a time. HTI has also replaced all plastic cups at water stations around site for paper ones in addition to reducing the amount of plastic bottles in our meeting rooms and kitchens.

These are just some of the efforts H&T Industrial is making towards a better future for us all. We believe we are at the forefront of tackling some of the most important issues of our time and we are proud to be making and will continue to make these critical changes.
